Lighthouses & Lakeboats
Books by
Wes Oleszewski
|
|
“Stormy
Seas” is Wes Oleszewski’s first book. Published in 1991, the text
contains a total of 17 short stories of actual maritime adventures
in Great Lakes history. In seeking stories to fill this book, the
author went in search of the over-looked events, and obscure persons
in lakes history. Items such as the long lost letter from an eye-witness
to the great storm of 1913, and the lakeboat that fell prey to the
Friday the 13th jinx are highlights in this text.
Stories contained within “Stormy Seas”
range in dates from 1886 to 1985, spanning a full century. Additionally,
nearly all of the Great Lakes and their surrounding waters are found
as settings for the tales within this book.

In
selecting the photos for his first book, the author deliberately
went in search of photos that had not been published in other books
of Great Lakes ships. Along with these photos include a series of
maps that give a frame-work in which each chapter is created.
The author has written each chapter
in the form of “Historical Narrative”. There is no sex, off color
language or gratuitous violence to be found in any of the stories
and all events are factual in their telling. The way in which the
tales are told, however, is far from dry as each individual reader
is transported to the place and time of the event as if they were
actually aboard the vessels involved.

In
what would later become one of the author’s trademarks, he goes
to great lengths to seek out the tales of the “ladies of the lakes”.
Having often been over-looked by other authors, the ladies who served
aboard lake vessels represent an important link in the maritime
history of the region, thus the readers will meet such female mariners
as Mrs. P.J. Niskern and Julia Greawreath. These two brave ladies
found very different fates upon the frigid waters of the Great lakes
and their plight can be found within this text.
“Stormy Seas” is 184 pages long and
contains photos, etchings, maps and a bibliography.
